We genuinely care for our environment. In order to maintain and preserve the natural beauty of our vineyards as well as the surrounding environment, our goal is to reduce our climate change impacts wherever and whenever possible. We are committed to doing so to ensure future generations also enjoy a lifetime of key moments.

SOLAR POWER

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, Taltarni is proud to announce the installation of solar power to the roof of the Taltarni winery, in effort to supply cleaner and greener renewable energy. 
In just the first 3 months, this solar power has generated over 40 Mega Watt hours of green energy which equates to a reduction of over 30% in power requirements for the peak months of Harvest. We also have avoided the production of 29 tonnes of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Taltarni remains committed to our ongoing sustainability strategy, and continue as we strive towards reducing our carbon footprint through solar power and innovative farming practices such as our famous insectarium.


Taltarni's environmental initiatives include, but are not limited to:


  • Maintaining an "Insectarium" (vegetation corridor) of around 2,000 native plants that provide a pollen and nectar source for a range of beneficial insects, greatly reducing our need for chemicals and other controls in our vineyards
    • Our "Insectarium", the brainchild of viticulturalist Matt Bailey, places Taltarni at the very fore of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
    • Matt refers to our "Insectariums" as Insect Holiday Resorts - the insect "holidaymakers", the good insects, eat the bad insects that eat the vines
    • Matt regularly monitors the insect populations with surveys and samplings that are sent to the University of Melbourne's Zoology Department for identification and analysis
    • There are currently three Insectariums at Taltarni, and we're incorporating additional insectariums into all new vineyard plantings
  • Conducting native grass trials to reduce our reliance on herbicides and increase our populace of beneficial insects within rows
  • Rolling/crimping of cover-crops to reduce fuel usage and compactions and increase soil biology and moisture retention
  • Properly disposing of chemical drums via Drum Muster outlets
  • Applying natural products, such as seaweed, to the soil and canopy as well as microorganism stimulants to the soil
  • Restocking our damns with native fish
  • Refraining from using Diuron and Simazine on our property, thereby reducing the impact on ground water
  • Regularly monitoring for PD and only spraying when necessary (fresh-hold is reached)
  • "Recycling the vines" by mulching/chipping old or unwanted blocks/vines and adding our grape marc plus composted cow manure and home-grown hay to create mulch, which is later put back into the vineyard/block (sustainable)
Taltarni is a proud signatory of the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC), and as such, we're reducing the effects of our packaging on the environment.

Our Insectarium featured on ABC's Landline in "A Bug's Life" on 03/04/2011


  • Mulching all our poly pipe which is collected from dismantled blocks into manageable piles and later recycled into other products (ie plastic posts) via the processor
  • Planting 600 – 1,200 native shrubs each year within our vineyard to protect against soil erosion while rehabilitating the surrounding environment (bushland) by increasing wildlife (fauna/flora)
  • Taking our guardianship of 500 hectares of bushland, home to many kangaroos, koalas, echidnas (as well as a resident hawk!) seriously
  • Recycling all our steel posts and wires from dismantled blocks/vineyards
  • Propagating our own native plants sourced from the Taltarni vineyard and later replanting them back into the environment within the "Insectariums"/blocks/vineyards
  • Recycling all our engine oils, which are collected by waste management
  • Recycling waste water as irrigation water for the paddocks
  • Implementing sustainability/self-sufficiency programs to reduce power and water usage in the winery (ie the only water used for cleaning and other processes is that which is collected via our roofs and held in our own large water storage facility)
