Sustainability
Our place has been shaped over millennia, serving as wine country for a century and safeguarded by Taltarni for 50 years… and we intend to prepare it for the next thousand. For us, embracing regenerative practices isn’t just about the present; it’s about responsible stewardship for the future. By adopting these practices as it’s current custodians, not only will we leave the land in a better state than we found it, we ensure that future generations will still be able to enjoy wines that authentically reflect the unique character of this place.
Insectarium
Our ‘insectarium’ is a vegetation corridor of more than 2000 native plants that provide pollen and nectar for a range of beneficial insects.
This helps us dramatically reduce our use of pesticides and chemicals by 80%.
Taltarni was the first winery to adopt an insectariums, and we now share this knowledge nationally and globally.
Biodiversity
We protect and nurture local flora and fauna by:
Planting 600 to 1200 native shrubs each year to protect against soil erosion and rehabilitating bushland, thereby increasing wildlife
Conducting native grass trials to reduce our reliance on herbicides and increase our populace of beneficial insects within rows
Applying natural products like seaweed, to the soil and canopy, as well as microorganism stimulants to the soil
Propagating our own native plants sourced from the vineyard, and later replanting them back into the environment within the ‘insectariums’
Rolling/crimping of cover-crops to reduce fuel usage and compactions and increase soil biology and moisture retention
Avoiding use of Diuron and Simazine on our property, thereby reducing the impact on groundwater
Regularly monitoring for PD and only spraying when necessary (fresh-hold is reached)
Restocking our dams with native fish.
Waste Management
We manage waste responsibly by:
‘Recycling the vines’. We mulch old or unwanted blocks/vines and add our grape marc, composted cow manure and home-grown hay. This is later put back into the vineyard/block
Mulching all our poly pipe which is collected from dismantled blocks into manageable piles and later recycled into other products (i.e. plastic posts) via the processor
Recycling all our engine oils, which are collected by waste management
Recycling wastewater to use as irrigation for the paddocks
Reducing the effects of our packaging on the environment through our proud membership of the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC).
The Winery
We’re continually improving the energy efficiency of the winery through:
- Solar panels on the roof of the winery to supply cleaner and greener renewable energy
- Implementing self-sufficiency programs to reduce power and water usage in the winery, including storing and using water collected from our roof
- Locally sourced produce served at cellar door to reduce food miles.
